Hufflepuff

Updated: Mar 31, 2021

"You might belong in Hufflepuff, Where they are just and loyal, Those patient Hufflepuff's are true, And unafraid of toil."— The Sorting Hat

Hufflepuff was one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Its founder was the medieval witch Helga Hufflepuff. Hufflepuff was the most inclusive among the four houses; valuing hard work, dedication, patience, loyalty, and fair play rather than a particular aptitude in its members. The emblematic animal was a badger, yellow and black were its house colours. The Head of Hufflepuff was Pomona Sprout,(Herbology teacher) and the Fat Friar was the House's patron ghost.

Hufflepuff corresponded roughly to the element of earth, and it is for that reason that the House colours were chosen: yellow represented wheat, while black was emblematic of soil. The Hufflepuff point hourglass contains yellow diamonds. Students sorted into Hufflepuff often demonstrate exceptional abilities in Herbology, owing to their correspondence to earth. Students belonging to this house were known to be hard-working, friendly, loyal, honest and rather impartial. It may be that due to their values, Hufflepuff's are not as competitive as the other houses, and are more modest about their accomplishments. Hufflepuff is the most inclusive among the four houses; valuing hard work, dedication, patience, loyalty, and fair play rather than a particular aptitude in its students. Students in Hufflepuff were known to value everyone and treat them as equal. Hufflepuff appeared to have the least rivalry with the other houses, except in Quidditch, although the Triwizard Tournament did temporarily put a great deal of strain on the relationship between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff, due to unusual circumstances of the selection of both Gryffindor student Harry Potter and Hufflepuff student Cedric Diggory as Champions.

Common Room

It also emphasizes comfort, said to be "the coziest common room of them all". It is at one floor below the ground and is very sheltered from the elements, generally allowing students to sleep easier than those in the towers (like Gryffindor and Ravenclaw). The entrance to the common room is located "in a nook on the right hand side of the kitchen corridor", concealed behind a stack of barrels. In order to reveal the entrance, no password is required. Instead, one must tap the barrel two from the bottom, middle of the second row, in the rhythm of ‘Helga Hufflepuff’, which will make the lid swing open, exposing a passageway that will lead to the basement when crawled through. However, if the wrong lid is tapped or the wrong rhythm is used, the intruder will be doused in vinegar. The actual basement itself is round, earthy, low-ceilinged, welcoming, warm, and sunny. There are lots of yellow hangings, burnished copper, and overstuffed sofas and armchairs upholstered in yellow and black, and circular windows that provide a vista of "rippling grass and dandelions". There is also a large, honey colored, wooden mantelpiece with carvings of badgers on it. This is located underneath a portrait of the house's founder, Helga Hufflepuff.

One of the Famous characters who are in Hufflepuff are:

Cedric Diggory (from the Triwizard Tournament)

Newt Scamander(Magizoologist)

Hannah Abbott(Half Blood)

Justin Finch(petrified in chamber of secrets)

Susan Bones(Aunt works for the Ministry)

Nymphadora Tonks (Metamorphmagus or shapeshifters)

Teddy Lupin (son of Nymphadora)

Tom Riddle or Lord Voldemort had made an horcrux (a part of his soul) from Helga Hufflepuff's cup. It was a small golden cup with two finely-wrought handles with a badger engraved on the side and a few jewels. he had hid it in Bellatrix Lestage's Vault at Gringotts Bank.
