Gryffindor

Updated: Mar 31, 2021

"You might belong in Gryffindor,

Where dwell the brave at heart,

Their daring, nerve, and chivalry

Set Gryffindor's apart"— The Sorting Hat

Gryffindor is one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was founded by Godric Gryffindor. The emblematic animal is a lion, and its colours are scarlet and gold. The Gryffindor house emphasizes the traits of courage as well as "daring, nerve, and chivalry. Minerva McGonagall is the head of the Gryffindor house. She is the Transfiguration teacher at Hogwarts. Minerva is a stern witch, but very righteous. According to J.K. Rowling Gryffindor roughly corresponds to the element of fire.

Gryffindor Tower

The Gryffindor common room and dormitories are located in Gryffindor Tower. Students enter the tower through a painting of the Fat Lady pink silk dress on the Gryffindor landing. They must give her the correct password in order to get her to swing open to reveal the entrance. If someone gives her the wrong password, they are denied entrance.

Gryffindor's common room has stuffed armchairs and a cozy fire. The arched windows look out over the expansive Quidditch Pitch, Hogwarts Lake, and the Forbidden Forest. Hung above the Fireplace is a picture of Godric Gryffindor.

The walls are decorated with pictures of mythical creatures and notable Gryffindor members. Winding mahogany staircases lead to the dormitories. The dormitories have ancient mahogany four-poster beds hung with scarlet curtains with threaded gold. if someone else (other than girls) try to enter the girls dormitories the staircase turns into a slide. The house ghost is Nearly Headless Nick. He is the friendliest ghost in Hogwarts (except for the Fat Friar) and he'll help you whenever you need him. He's also quite fascinating. He was too petrified in the chamber of secrets with a Hufflepuff boy called Justin Finch. Long before the Sorting Hat was, well, the Sorting Hat, it belonged to Godric Gryffindor. The Hat’s song even talks about how Gryffindor was the one who had the idea of turning his normal hat into something much more, although all the founders had a hand in creating the Sorting Hat as we know it today. Some of the more notable Gryffindor's include: Dumbledore, McGonagall, Rubeus Hagrid, Sirius Black, James and Lily Potter and their son Harry, Arthur and Molly Weasley and all of their children, Hermione Granger, Neville Longbottom, and Remus Lupin.

The sword of Gryffindor

The sword of Gryffindor was made a thousand years ago by goblins, the magical world’s most skilled metalworkers, and is therefore enchanted. Fashioned from pure silver, it is inset with rubies, the stone that represents Gryffindor in the hour-glasses that count the house points at Hogwarts. Godric Gryffindor’s name is engraved just beneath the hilt.

Gryffindor defended himself with his wand, but did not kill his attackers. Instead he sent them back to their king bewitched, to deliver the threat that if he ever tried to steal from Gryffindor again, Gryffindor would unsheathe the sword against them all.

The goblin king took the threat seriously and left Gryffindor in possession of his rightful property, but remained resentful until he died. This was the foundation for the legend of Gryffindor’s theft that persists, in some sections of the goblin community, to this day.

Quidditch

They play in robes of scarlet, their House color. The mascot of Gryffindor House and its Quidditch team is a lion.

Interestingly, a member of the Weasley family has held every one of the positions on the team. Ginny was a Chaser and a substitute Seeker, Charlie was a Seeker, Fred and George Weasley were Beaters, and Ron was the Keeper. Harry Was a seeker in the Quidditch team. His father also played Quidditch as a seeker. The head of the Gryffindor house, Minerva McGonagall also played Quidditch at her time.

When Harry Potter played during his first year at Hogwarts, he was the youngest player in more than a hundred years. He also had to be given special dispensation to have his own broomstick at school, (a Nimbus 2000). This was due to the fact that first years were not allowed their own brooms, most likely because of safety reasons. This broomstick was a present from the Head of Gryffindor house, Minerva McGonagall, delivered to him during breakfast in the Great Hall one morning. This was a racing broom that would come in handy regarding chasing and catching the elusive and incredibly fast Snitch. The Gryffindor Quidditch team practiced three times a week under Oliver Wood's very strict supervision.
